St. Joseph, MO-KS Metro Area Immigration

Population

The St. Joseph Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) population 1/ increased from 115,240 in 1970 to 127,329 in 2010. That was an increase of 10.5 percent.

The foreign-born (FB) population increased from 1,314 in 1970 to 2,677 in 2010. That was an increase of 103.7 percent. The foreign-born share changed from 1.1 percent to 2.1 percent.

The share of the overall population that was native-born (NB) increased by 9.4 percent.

Sources of Population Change

The primary sources of population change are:

The first chart below shows the three population change factors for three periods adjusted for annual average amounts. Natural change (B-D) was the primary factor in adding population in all periods,

The second chart shows the same data but with an adjustment to reflect births to immigrants shifted to NIM. In it, B-D remained the main factor adding population in the first two periods, replaced by NIM in the most recent period.
